DSEAR Training - FAQs

Is DSEAR training a legal requirement?

Yes. Regulation 9 of DSEAR requires that personnel must be provided with sufficient information, instruction, and training wherever a dangerous substance is present in the workplace.

Who needs DSEAR training?

DSEAR training is required for anyone working with or responsible for dangerous substances, including operators, cleaning staff, contractors, engineers, HSE managers, project managers, senior management, and directors. The type of training and information required is different depending on the role and responsibilities of personnel.

What does DSEAR training cover?

DSEAR training should be tailored to provide information relevant to your role and responsibilities in order to perform your job safely.

For example, a course aimed at operators and cleaning staff may include a basic overview of their duties under DSEAR, information on the dangerous substances at their workplace, the meaning of Ex signage and hazardous areas, information on ignition control measures (e.g. why mobile phones are prohibited in hazardous areas), and why good housekeeping is important.

A course aimed at HSE or project managers may include more detailed information on DSEAR, including how it should be managed across the site or organisation. It might also go into more detail on how to identify fire and explosion hazards, how to perform hazardous area classification and DSEAR risk assessments, how to correctly specify, install and maintain ATEX equipment, and how explosion protection systems work and should be maintained.

Can DSEAR training be tailored to our site?

Yes. Our DSEAR training courses are designed to be tailored to suit your site and include real-world and practical examples which are relatable to your employees.
